This programme supports primary teachers to develop specialist knowledge for teaching number.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will:  

  • Enhance their maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on the key concepts, the representations and the language used to help pupils develop a deep understanding of the maths being taught. 
  • Identify pedagogical approaches that will enhance teaching and learning, and know how to plan for these. 
  • Identify common misconceptions and ways of addressing these to help pupils master important concepts. 
  • Increase their confidence in planning for progression in maths. 

Pupils will:  

  • Use appropriate representations to support their mathematical work.  
  • Positively engage with maths that challenges them. 
  • Be able to explain their maths and their mathematical thinking using appropriate language. 

What is involved?

Participants will:

  • Attend four face-to-face days over the course of the year where they will enhance subject expertise and practice development, in relation to the teaching of number.
  • Contribute to an online community, complete school-based tasks, and share their reflections through discussions with peers in between sessions.   

Who can take part?

Primary teachers who wish to develop specialist knowledge for teaching maths, complementing teaching for mastery approaches. It is particularly relevant for teachers that have not received maths-specific training.
