Primary Teaching for Mastery (Introductory) Work Groups

‘Children’s chances of success are maximised if they develop deep and lasting understanding of mathematical procedures and concepts.’ - NCETM

This two-year programme is the start of a CPD journey which enables schools to develop the vital skills and practices to build a sustainable and coherent approach to the teaching of mathematics through a teaching for mastery approach. The Mastery approach encourages learning through carefully sequenced small steps that build on prior learning, ensuring that every child can learn and enjoy maths.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will:

  • Along with school leaders, review existing policies, systems, and classroom practices, prioritising actions linked to the ‘Catalysts for Change’ (Vision and Culture; Subject Expertise; Mathematical Mindsets; Arithmetical Proficiency; and Systems).
  • Develop the ability to design, teach, and reflect on effective lessons that reflect fidelity to teaching for mastery, with the focus on improving pupil outcomes.
  • Enhance their maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on progression within key areas of maths.
  • Promote a collaborative learning culture, supporting deep, sustained professional learning through the implementation of professional development structures.
  • Develop a shared vision for maths, involving the whole school community, with a focus on fostering positive mindsets among pupils and staff.

Pupils will:

  • Demonstrate an improved mathematical mindset and enjoy learning the subject.
  • Demonstrate improved learning, evidenced by internal school data and teacher reflections.

What is involved?

  • Two teachers from each participating school join a Work Group, which is led by a trained Mastery Specialist.
  • Work Groups will meet, roughly once per half term to plan, observe and discuss teaching for mastery.
  • Schools will also receive termly bespoke support through a 1:1 school visit with a Mastery Specialist, who can support leaders in developing systems that embed teaching for mastery within their school.
  • Work Groups will focus on the principles that underpin a Teaching for Mastery approach including ‘The Five Big Ideas’ and ‘The Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery’ as well as the EEF Implementation Guide and the latest Ofsted maths subject report.
  • Schools will also explore key resources, including the NCETM’s Primary Mastery PD Materials, Curriculum Prioritisation Materials, and the 2020 DfE Maths Guidance, and consider how to use them effectively.

Who can take part?

The programme is open to all state-funded Primary schools who are new to teaching for mastery. The Maths Lead and one other participant will attend sessions, with the support of the Headteacher, and will play a vital role in leading developments back in school.
