Years 5 - 8 Continuity
BackYears 5 - 8 Continuity Work Group
This project is for those who teach maths in Years 5 to 8. The aim is to develop curriculum and pedagogical continuity over Years 5 to 8, working alongside feeder schools where possible, to enable smoother transition from Primary to Secondary school.
What Will You Learn?
Participants will:
- Have a deeper knowledge and understanding of the curriculum across KS2 and KS3, including the expectations of students at the end of each Key Stage, in relation to specific areas of the curriculum.
- Have a deeper understanding of the approaches which support students as they transition from KS2 to KS3, including the importance of consistency of language and representations relating to specific areas of the curriculum.
- Develop understanding of how teaching for mastery develops in KS2 and KS3
- Develop practice to address areas where there are possible barriers to progress in KS3
- Ensure that curriculum planning at KS3 is better informed by KS2 content, and curriculum planning at KS2 identifies the priority learning which underpins progression, preparing students for the KS3 curriculum.
Pupils will:
- Be better prepared for the curriculum transition from KS2 to KS3.
- Have improved understanding in KS3, based on strong connections with KS2 foundations.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude to maths.
What is involved?
Participants will:
- Attend half-termly workshops focusing on key elements of Teaching for Mastery that are common to both KS2 and KS3 maths teaching and learning.
- Carry out school-based activities between Work Groups, making use of the resources with their own pupils. They will explore materials and resources, trial tasks out with pupils, reflect on these and report back at the next Work Group.
Who can take part?
Open to participants who teach and/or have responsibility for the maths curriculum in Years 5 to 8. Ideally, secondary schools will attend with feeder primary schools to develop transition practice and promote better collaboration.
