Mastering Number at Reception & KS1 Work Group

The programme aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense. Over time, pupils will develop fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2.

New for 2026/27, spatial reasoning materials to develop understanding of how to teach shape, space, pattern and measure in Reception will be provided.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will:  

  • Develop a secure understanding of how to build firm mathematical foundations with a stronger subject and pedagogical understanding for EYFS and KS1. 
  • Understand and use appropriate manipulatives to support the teaching of mathematical structures. 
  • Develop teaching strategies focused on developing fluency in calculation and number sense for all pupils. 
  • Develop understanding of how EYFS pupils progress in their knowledge and understanding of maths concepts and support planning in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 provision.

Pupils will:  

  • Develop fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.  
  • Make good progress towards the Early Learning Goals and year group expectations. 

What is involved?

Participants will:

  • Attend three central workshops online and three local workshops across the year. They will also be provided with teaching materials for four short Mastering Number sessions a week. 
  • Lead Teachers will also contribute to an online community to share practice and engage in critical reflection. 

Who can take part?

For 2026/27 this Work Group is open to all schools including those that have previously engaged with the programme.

Participating schools will send three teachers – one each from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 – known as Lead Teachers.

Places on this programme are extremely limited, so please ensure that you register as early as possible so that your application can be considered. It is fully funded by the Maths Hub so is free to participating schools.
