BackReception Teachers Programme
This programme supports Reception teachers to develop specialist knowledge for teaching maths, and use a teaching for mastery approach. It would be particularly valuable for Reception teachers and their teaching assistants to attend the programme together so that they can collaborate on developing classroom practice.
What Will You Learn?
Participants will:
- Explore and increase their use of a range of pedagogic approaches that will support pupils in engaging with and developing their maths
- Demonstrate enhanced maths subject knowledge using developmental learning trajectories to assess and plan for well-sequenced and coherent learning opportunities
- Develop increased confidence in enhancing opportunities for mathematical learning in all areas of provision and in everyday routines
- Develop their ability to model the use of mathematical language and thinking as part of everyday activities
- Understand how to support children’s learning through developing oracy, spatial reasoning and executive function skills across all areas of mathematics routines
Pupils will:
- Be able to communicate their maths and mathematical thinking through representations and/or appropriate mathematical language
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and interest in maths, look for patterns and relationships, spot connections, and be willing to ‘have a go’
- Talk to adults and peers about what they notice and not be afraid to make a mistake
What is involved?
Participants will:
- Attend four face-to-face days over the course of the year where they will enhance subject expertise and practice development.
- Between sessions, participants will contribute to an online community, complete school-based tasks, and share their reflections through discussions with peers.
- There will also be NCETM-led modules equivalent to one day.
This one-year programme to support practitioners to develop their specialist knowledge to ensure Reception pupils have the best start in life.

Who can take part?
Teachers working in Reception, particularly those that have not received maths-specific training, have recently moved phases, or Maths leads wishing to deepen their knowledge of Reception maths practice.
