Cross-Phase – Supporting Students to Achieve a L2 Qualification in Mathematics

This programme is for teachers whose students will study up to Level 2 maths across secondary or post-16. Teachers of Years 10 and 11, and those who teach GCSE Maths resit and/or Functional Skills Maths, will develop ways to support students who need to study maths beyond age 16 to achieve a L2 qualification.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will:  

  • Work with school or college leaders to improve curriculum and teaching continuity between KS4 and post-16 (GCSE Resit/Functional Skills). 
  • Deepen your understanding of effective transition strategies and collaborate with colleagues to embed them in your practice. 
  • Use consistent language, representations, and methods across KS4 and post-16 to support student understanding and confidence. 
  • Design lessons that reflect strong sequencing and address barriers to learning, ensuring smoother transitions for students. 
  • Use knowledge of student’s prior learning to inform curriculum planning and identify key areas that support successful progression. 

Students will:    

  • Be better prepared for transition from KS4 to post-16 (GCSE Resit and/or Functional Skills). 
  • In KS4 : show an increased understanding of their route to a Level 2 qualification (either GCSE or Functional Skills).  
  • In post-16 : demonstrate a more positive attitude to maths and make more progression through transition and beyond.  

What is involved?

Teachers will :

  • Participate in five afternoon sessions across the academic year, focused on supporting Level 2 learners across different phases.
  • Each session will develop practical strategies and deepen understanding of effective cross-phase teaching approaches.
  • Between sessions, participants will engage with an online professional community, complete targeted school-based activities, and reflect on their experiences through collaborative discussions with colleagues. 

Who can take part?

This opportunity is for teachers of GCSE Maths, and for those teaching GCSE Maths resit and/or Functional Skills Maths. Participants may be based in secondary schools, UTCs, FE colleges, Sixth Form colleges, schools with post-16 provision, or other post-16 settings.
