Developing Fluency - Year 8
BackDeveloping Fluency with Multiplicative Reasoning at KS3 (Year 8) Work Group
This opportunity focuses on supporting students to develop a deep and connected understanding of multiplicative reasoning. Working in a professional learning community, teachers will explore effective ways to teach multiplicative reasoning, share strategies and use carefully designed classroom resources and guidance materials to improve their teaching.
This Work Group focuses on Year 8 content and is open to schools that took part in the Year 7 Work Group in 24/25.
What Will You Learn?
Participants will:
- Collaborate with school leaders to align teaching with the NCETM’s Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery.
- Share learning with departmental colleagues to support wider impact.
- Deepen understanding of multiplicative reasoning and mastery-aligned pedagogy.
- Engage in a professional learning community to reflect, refine, and share effective practice.
- Promote mathematical reasoning for all students through connected, inclusive teaching strategies.
- Develop classroom practices and pedagogical approaches that build deep conceptual understanding.
- Support colleagues in engaging with mastery materials and adapt KS3 schemes for coherence in multiplicative reasoning.
What is involved?
Participants will:
- Attend six afternoon sessions led by local leads, contribute to an online community, complete school-based tasks and share their observations through discussions with peers.
