Secondary Teaching for Mastery Work Group

Secondary Teaching for Mastery Work Groups are offered to support departments embedding Teaching for Mastery across Key Stage 3 and 4. This opportunity is for schools that have previously participated in a Secondary Teaching for Mastery Work Group or have a trained Mastery Specialist in their department.

What Will You Learn?

Participants will:  

  • Share a common vision and principles aligned with the NCETMs Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery. 
  • Promote a connected curriculum that supports mastery teaching. 
  • Value collaborative professional learning and curriculum coherence.
  • Deepen understanding of mastery-aligned practices and leadership support. 
  • Implement a sustained development plan with clear, evidence-based aims.
  • Enhance classroom practices and co-create a coherent curriculum. 
  • Establish systems that support collaboration and shared pedagogical development. 
  • Consistently develop teaching for mastery approaches within their departments. 

Students will:  

  • Develop a deep, secure and connected understanding of the maths they are learning.  
  • Achieve both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.  
  • Think, reason and discuss their maths to deepen their understanding.  
  • Have a positive attitude to maths and attain high levels of achievement in maths. 

What is involved?

Each school will nominate two teachers to take part. Participants should be well placed to lead change within the department. 

Participants will choose one of four key areas, depending on their priorities: 

 • Focus A: Developing mathematical thinking across the department  

• Focus B: Improving collaborative planning and lesson observation  

• Focus C: Deepening understanding of teaching for mastery principles  

• Focus D: Building coherence across maths and science departments 

Participants will attend two face-to-face afternoon sessions and four online twilights sessions throughout the course of the academic year. 

Who can take part?

The intended participants for this Work Group are teachers in schools which have previously engaged with a Secondary Teaching for Mastery Programme or Work Group. This includes all schools which have previously engaged with a Development Work Group and schools who have had a Secondary Mastery Specialist trained in Cohorts 1 to 8.
