A Level Community
BackDeveloping A Level Pedagogy Work Group
The A level pedagogy Work Group builds a supportive professional community across schools to enhance teaching, and foster professional growth. Teachers try new strategies, share ideas, and collaborate regularly across the course of the year. Led by experienced maths educators, the group promotes innovation and school-wide improvement through peer learning and practical classroom application.
What Will You Learn?
Participants will:
- Deepen your pedagogical knowledge, exploring effective strategies for teaching mechanics through topics such as kinematics, moments, and circular motion, whilst incorporating the overarching themes of A level Maths.
- Discover how the NCETM's Teaching for Mastery approach and the use of technology can enrich your lessons.
Students will:
- Benefit from conceptually rich lessons that enhance their reasoning, understanding, and enjoyment of A level Mathematics.
- Make stronger connections between topics, building confidence in tackling unfamiliar problems.
- Engage more deeply through discussion, modelling, and structured problem solving.
What is involved?
Across six sessions delivered through a blend of in-person and virtual meetings, you’ll work alongside other A level Maths teachers in a supportive, collaborative environment. Each session is a chance to spark new ideas, share experiences, and co-create lesson sequences, activities, or resources.
Between sessions, you’ll try out new approaches in your own teaching and reflect on the impact they have had. You’ll gain valuable insights from your peers, exchange practical strategies, and build a toolkit of ideas to energise your department.
At the end of the programme, you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on a short summary of what you’ve discovered or developed, helping you reflect and share your learning more widely.
Who can take part?
This Work Group is for current A level Maths teachers who are looking to deepen their pedagogical practice, not just subject knowledge, by exploring how to teach A level Maths more effectively.
You should be teaching an A level Maths group during the programme. Your school or college should support your participation by releasing you for all sessions and encouraging you to share your learning with colleagues.
