Developing Core Maths Pedagogy
BackDeveloping Core Maths Pedagogy Work Group
This free, sustained CPD builds a vibrant Core Maths teaching community focused on contextual problem-solving. Through collaboration and exploration, participants enhance teaching strategies, develop open-ended problem-solving skills, and strengthen cross-curricular links. The aim is to support a more applied, long-term learning approach that aligns with the Core Maths philosophy.
What Will You Learn?
Participants will:
- Discover fresh ways to bring Core Maths to life using real-world data and authentic problem-solving contexts.
- Explore strategies for encouraging critical thinking, working with data in context, and making maths feel more relevant and engaging.
- Collaborate with colleagues to share approaches, make purposeful use of existing Core Maths resources, and find creative ways to link maths across subjects.
Students will:
- Become more confident in applying maths to everyday contexts
- Develop transferable skills that support other subjects and future study or employment
- Learn to question data, think critically, and appreciate the value of maths beyond the classroom.
What is involved?
This Work Group brings together Core Maths teachers for six sessions, delivered through a blend of in-person and virtual meetings. With a focus on engaging with real world data, you’ll explore how to use authentic contexts to enrich your teaching and support students in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Sessions will include collaborative planning, sharing of classroom experiences, and discussion of effective strategies for teaching through contextualised problem-solving. You’ll also explore how to make the most of existing Core Maths resources and pre-release materials.
Between sessions, you’ll trial new approaches in your own classroom and reflect on their impact. The Work Group offers a supportive space to learn from others, build confidence, and strengthen your department’s Core Maths provision. At the end of the programme, you’ll have the opportunity to summarise your learning to support ongoing reflection and sharing.
Who can take part?
This Work Group is suitable for teachers currently delivering Core Maths in schools, sixth forms, or other post-16 settings. It is open to both maths specialists and non-specialists who want to develop their pedagogical practice. Your institution should support your participation by releasing you for all sessions and encouraging you to share your learning with colleagues.
