Mastering Number (Embedding the Impact)
BackMastering Number Reception and KS1 (Embedding the Impact) Community
This programme aims to support Maths Leads with the continued implementation of Mastering Number at Reception and KS1 within their own schools, and to support the Year 3 teacher to use the teaching materials provided for Year 3 pupils. New for 2026/27, spatial reasoning materials to develop understanding of how to teach shape, space, pattern and measure in Reception will be provided.
What Will You Learn?
Participants will:
- Develop a secure understanding of how to build firm mathematical foundations with a stronger subject and pedagogical understanding for EYFS, KS1 and Year 3.
- Develop understanding of how EYFS pupils progress in their knowledge and understanding of maths concepts and support planning in EYFS, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3.
- Embed and sustain Mastering Number sessions for Reception, KS1 and Year 3.
- Develop teaching strategies focused on developing fluency in calculation and number sense.
- Support colleagues to develop and refine the use of pedagogical strategies that support the development of fluency in additive facts for all pupils.
- Support the Year 3 teacher(s) to secure pupils’ additive facts, using materials provided for Year 3.
Pupils will:
- Develop fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.
- Show confidence in exploring additive relationships.
- Make good progress towards the Early Learning Goals and year group expectations.
- Be able to communicate their mathematical ideas clearly.
What is involved?
Participants will attend three central workshops online and two local workshops across the year. The Year 3 teacher(s) will be expected to use the teaching materials as part of a 10-15 minute fluency session, four days a week; this is in addition to the main maths lesson. Lead Teachers will also contribute to an online community to share practice and engage in critical reflection.
This programme will support maths leads to understand how to embed effective practice in Reception and into Key Stage 1, to ensure all pupils have the best start in life.

Who can take part?
Open to schools who have previously engaged in Mastering Number at Reception and KS1. Schools need to be participating in a Teaching for Mastery Work Group.
Please note that this programme is not currently open to junior schools.
