The programme aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense. Pupils will develop fluency in multiplication and division facts and a confidence and flexibility with number.
What Will You Learn?
Participants will:
- Develop an understanding of how pupils progress in their knowledge and understanding of multiplicative concepts.
- Develop teaching strategies focused on developing fluency in multiplication and division facts for all pupils.
- Develop a secure understanding of how to embed pupil understanding and their ability to apply multiplicative reasoning to a range of contexts.
- Secure an understanding of the fluency expectations in Year 4 with a focus on supporting pupils to access the multiplication tables check.
- Support Year 5 pupils to continue to have automaticity of multiplication and division facts.
Pupils will:
- Develop automaticity in multiplication and division facts through regular practice.
- Gain confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense when looking at the multiplicative relationship.
What is involved?
Participants will:
- Attend three central workshops online and three local workshops across the year. They will be provided with teaching materials for five short Mastering Number sessions a week.
- Lead Teachers will also contribute to an online community to share practice and engage in critical reflection.
Who can take part?
Schools need to be participating in a Teaching for Mastery Work Group. Participating schools will send two teachers – one each from Year 4 and Year 5 – known as Lead Teachers.
